Your Instagram Is Not a Business Address

Instagram is incredible for building an audience. I'm not here to tell you to delete it. But I am here to tell you something most business owners don't realize until it's too late:

You don't own Instagram. Meta does.

Every follower, every like, every DM. It all lives on their servers, under their rules, inside their algorithm. And when that algorithm changes (and it does, constantly), your reach drops overnight. No warning. No appeal. Just gone.

Rented vs. owned

In marketing, there's a concept called owned media vs. rented media.

Rented media is any platform you don't control. Instagram. TikTok. Facebook. You're a tenant. You can decorate the place, post every day, build a following. But the landlord can evict you at any time.

Owned media is what you actually control. Your website. Your domain. Your email list. Your analytics. Nobody can take that away from you.

Rented (Instagram)
  • No SEO
  • No checkout
  • No product filtering
  • Vanity metrics only
  • Algorithm changes
Owned (Website)
  • Google finds you
  • Direct checkout
  • Filters, search, sort
  • Real conversion data
  • You control it

The numbers don't lie

Here's what most business owners never see because Instagram doesn't show you:

Imagine you post a product on Instagram. It gets 200 likes. Feels great. But how many of those 200 people actually inquired? How many bought? You have no idea.

Now imagine that same product on a website with analytics:

Viewed page
0
Favorited
0
Clicked WhatsApp
0
Messaged
0
Bought it
0

0.6% conversion rate. Now you know where to improve.

On Instagram? You'd just see 200 likes and think "nice post."

The hybrid approach

I'm not saying delete Instagram. Use it. It's great for discovery, for building community, for showing behind-the-scenes content. But use it as a funnel top, not the whole funnel.

Instagram─────Discovery & content
Website─────Conversion & analytics
WhatsApp─────Closing the deal

That's the stack that actually works. Instagram brings them in. Your website converts them. WhatsApp closes them. And the analytics tell you exactly where to improve.

Real talk

I recently built a landing page for a marketing agency. Not a full website. Just a single page with social proof, video testimonials, pricing packages, and a Calendly booking widget. One page.

The result? They could suddenly measure everything. How many visitors. How far they scrolled. Which pricing tier got the most clicks. Where they dropped off. Before, they had an Instagram with followers but no idea if any of those followers were actually potential clients.

Now they know. And they can improve.

The takeaway

Instagram builds audience. Websites build businesses.

Your competitors love that you don't have a website. Because every customer who Googles you and doesn't find one? They're going to the competitor who did.

Don't let your online presence be someone else's property. Build something you own.
